The name "tortilla" was given to the flat bread that the Spanish found in what is today Mexico among the Aztec around the year 1,500 / 16th century. The word tortilla originates from the word “torta” which means round cake and was the principal food of the Aztecs, an ethnic group that dominated central Mexico.
